The Multilingual Learner Education (MLE) Department ensures that all facets of the school system are genuinely accessible to our students and seamlessly integrates them as learning community members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Vision<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where we want to be&#8230;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>WPS aspires to be a world-class school system that develops the heads, hearts, and hands of its students and inspires them to be critical thinkers, problem-solvers, artists and innovators who make contributions to their communities, our nation, and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sheltered English Immersion (SEI)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Initial Identification<\/strong><br>At the time of registration, we ask all parents to complete a Home Language Survey. Upon review of the Home Language Survey, if a language other than English is mentioned, the new student is assessed for English language proficiency:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speaking<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reading<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Writing<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Listening<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Initial Proficiency Level<\/strong><br>Our assessment tool for English proficiency is the\u00a0 WIDA-Screener.<br>This broad look at a student\u2019s ability to learn in English without support.<br><strong>Overall Scores in all areas range from 1-6<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1 = Entering \u2013 No English<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2 = Beginning<\/strong> \u2013 limited social and academic English<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3 = Developing<\/strong> \u2013 strong social and limited academic English<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>4 = Expanding<\/strong> \u2013 strong social and competent academic English<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5 = Bridging<\/strong> \u2013 strong social and strong academic English<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>6 = Reaching<\/strong> \u2013 fully able to compete with English-only students without support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SEI Program Description<\/strong><br>There are two main components to our program model:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Core academic classes<\/strong> \u2013 taught by licensed teachers who are specially trained to differentiate or shelter the language of the content for Multilingual Learners<br>AND<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>English as an additional language class<\/strong> \u2013 a separate content class taught by an English language development teacher<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SEI Program Locations: Fiske, Hardy, Schofield, Sprague, WMS and WHS<\/strong><br><em>Note: Although SEI is our chosen program model, parents may elect to \u201copt out\u201d and place their child in schools without direct English language instruction.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Annual Assessment: ACCESS<\/strong><br>Every year, in January, all ML students across Massachusetts must participate in ACCESS testing.<br>This is a continuous assessment of proficiency that assesses student\u2019s English skills:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speaking<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Reading<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Listening<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All students, including those who have opted out of program support, must participate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reclassification<\/strong><br>The State requires an ACCESS score of at least an overall score of 4.2 and a composite literacy score of 3.9 for reclassification. However, every child learns at their own pace.
